No that’s not a screenshot from Grand Theft Auto, this is a thing that I just learned actually exists and is for sale on my local FB marketplace!
Of course, there’s no reason you can’t combine a microlight aircraft and a small inflatable dinghy but the cases for its use must be pretty niche.
This particular example has only 7 flying hours and I have to wonder if the seat needs dry cleaning as it looks kind of terrifying.

That wing must produce incredible amounts of lift in order to counter the weight of the humongous balls required to operate that contraption.

My first hang-gliding flight was on an amphibious tandem glider. This isn’t me, but it’s my instructor.
The glider is launched with a boat tow.
Landing is on the water.
Hang gliders are sized appropriately for the load. A tandem glider has a lot more wing area and is really quite slow when flown solo. A bigger guy like me using a smaller wing is a recipe for a really fast flight.
My mom gave me a discovery flight for my birthday one year. Both my mom and my girlfriend also took flights. I went on to get my certificate and flew for several years.

Welcome to the weird world of Ultralight Aviation.

I have a lot of jumps from a plane but I’ve never done the powered paragliders or anything. My mom’s friend is a long time hang glider. I’ve thought about the paragliders, at least if you lose power you can just get down and even have a reserve. I would just want to cruise around the pretty areas near here. I see hang gliders launch off Mt Tam and land at Stinson Beach. On Oahu I would body board at Makapu’u and they would launch off the high cliffs above and land at Sandy s.

One of my high school physics teachers used to paraglide and told us stories of flying up onto a mountain during the day on thermals, campin
g overnight then powder skiing down in the morning - which sounded pretty awesome. Of course he also told us the story of how
he
gave it up after his wing
folded up
and he fell out of the sky breaking a bunch of bones
(luckily landed on his water tanks).

Oh I’d have a reserve, there is still risk. I used to jump with a bunch of weight so the motor might be similar.

This would be great for a Minnasota fishing trip. No loading up the boat, just fly to the next make!

You might be a bit weight limited about what you coukd bring back though....
“
Yeah i
t was thiiiiii
s (

course
I had to throw it
back cos it was too heavy to take off with”

I witnessed one in real life about 18 years ago. Building houses on Bay Harbor Yacht Club. 3 rich guys fired it up and flew over a billion dollars of houses and yachts. It was cool to see. Your post is the only other time I heard of this.
No way I would ride in that thing.

Lol.
couldn’t bring home that 50lb muskie in the old boat plane. What a shame.

A parasail is always tethered to the boat. This rig flies free once we hit 1,000 - 1,500 feet. It’s a lot of fun.
The flying bathtub has more things to break for sure, but it has the advantage of being able to power up and fly out of sketchy circumstances. That make it a lot more forgiving of bad pilot decisions.
Flying a hang glider made me a better private pilot. I had a better feel for what the plane was doing and could gauge the energy a lot more accurately than a lot of new pilots. On my first “dead stick” landing, my instructor said I met the standards for a commercial pilot. It was a moment that made me proud.

I feel the all-
terrain nature of this
thing has the
potential to get an
unprepared pilot
into real
trouble. L
ike
running out of fuel over
nothing but woods and muskeg kinda trouble
or coming back to land on a lake that is now all white-
caps.

It seems like an amazing
vehicle for an old-fashioned Indiana Jones style adventure. Like island hopping in SE Asia or
trying to find the source of the Nile. Sadly however I suspect their main purpose is what you describe, as a
beach house toy for rich dudes.

Your second scenario is exactly why the “ all-terrain” nature of this is more forgiving. Imagine the scenario where the lake is all white-caps and you don’t have gear to put down for a landing! As for the first scenario, running out of fuel or losing power is always a concern. That’s why practicing emergency situations is part of pilot training. It also helps to think about the gross weight and stall speeds. The Cherokee that I fly has a gross weight (max weight with fuel, passengers, and luggage) around 2,100 lbs and a stall speed of about 5 2 mph. This ultralight has a gross weight of 895 lbs and a stall speed of 30 mph. It’s easy to see which of the two is carrying more energy when it lands.

I’m a bit leery of paragliders because of the flexible wing. I’ve seen videos of chute collapses in what seems like calm air. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to try one!
